About AED

In view of the tremendous challenges being faced by the construction industry in Pakistan, the university of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, established the department of Architectural Engineering and Design during the year 2001. This was the first time that the discipline of Architectural Engineering and Design was introduced in Pakistan. Later on, other institutions in the country also realized the importance of Architectural Engineering and introduced this subject following the U.E.T. pattern. In the beginning, the department was established under the faculty of Architecture and Planning with five years course but later on it was transferred to the faculty of Civil Engineering with four years course. The most important reason behind the creation of the department of Architectural Engineering and Design was lack of professionals having multi-disciplinary knowledge/approach in the construction industry with reference to buildings design, structure, construction and management. Therefore, the key objective of the Architectural Engineering and Design department is to give quality education to the students and prepare them for the construction industry of Pakistan as successful professionals with innovative and multi-disciplinary approach. The department is also intended to conduct research in the areas related to building systems (structural, mechanical, electrical), building construction, integrated building design, sustainable materials, energy efficient buildings, green buildings, and the project management.

Architectural Engineering is a multidisciplinary program incorporating Architectural, Structural, Mechanical and Electrical disciplines. It is an accredited program by the Pakistan Engineering Council. Our graduates are serving within and outside the country and enjoying good repute. This degree is also internationally recognized and our graduates are studying in leading university of the world for M.Sc. and PhD in various fields of Architectural Engineering. An Architectural Engineer having background of multidisciplinary knowledge on various areas of buildings has a greater opportunity to work according to aptitude/ choice in private and public sectors organizations. The most prominent areas /choices include Building Structure, HVAC system of Buildings, Electrical System of Buildings (Lighting and Illumination), Building Construction, Energy Efficient Buildings, Integrated Building Design, Green Buildings, Project Management, Fire Safety, Acoustics of Buildings, Materials of Construction, and Conservation of historical Buildings. The department is equipped with the experience and the highly qualified faculty from various disciplines. In addition the faculty members from other departments such as Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Humanities and Islamic studies are frequently on the list of the department. The curriculum is based upon to create an understanding of how the building is designed and built and how the engineering systems fit into the building. The department has different laboratories and digital studios with the state of the art facilities. The study process is based upon lectures, studio work, experiments, assignments, discussions, presentations, juries, study trips, internships, seminars and workshops.

The department offers the following degree programs:

  1. B.Sc. in Architectural Engineering
  2. M.Sc. in Building Engineering
  3. M.Sc. in Integrated Building Design
  4. Ph.D. in Architectural Engineering
